Le Vieux Chemin

The Area and its Attractions

Le-Vieux-Chemin is in a beautifully tranquil position at the end of the village of Machennes. You can while away your visit in our one acre garden if you wish, but there is a lot to see and do if you feel like stirring.

Pons: - From our garden, you can see the Donjon at Pons, a fine example of a medieval fortress. Stroll along the river and around the ancient city walls before taking a drink at one of the cafes in the town square. Also close by is the town of Jonzac with its wonderful thermal swimming complex

Gironde Estuary: - It is 25 minutes drive to the wonderful safe beaches on the Gironde Estuary. On the way, why not stop off at one of the numerous producers of Cognac and Pineau (the local aperitif) where you can buy direct. Or try the roadside vendors for delicious local produce, especially fresh oysters at everyday prices.

Royan: - The jewel of the towns on the Estuary with a fine sandy beach, wonderful restaurants and especially popular on summer evenings when they hold concerts on the beach. Royan also has one of the finest zoos in Europe, which provides a great day out for the children.

Saintes: - A beautiful town of narrow streets and medieval houses. Sitting astride the River Charente, there are many Roman remains to be seen, including a vast amphitheatre. The Abbaye-aux-Dames is well worth a visit as is the archaeological museum.

Cognac: - Further upstream on the river Charente, lies Cognac, the home of great producers such as Martell, Camus and Hennessey. Cognac is a beautiful town in its own right, but any visit must include a trip around one of the distilleries to see how the vast wealth of the area was generated. Picture courtesy of O.T. La Rochelle: - A charming sea port with lots of harbour side restaurants and chic shopping for the ladies. Don’t miss the fantastic Aquarium, which boasts over 10,000 species from jellyfish to sharks.
